Have you ever felt like you’re carrying a heavy weight on your shoulders, one that drains your energy and colors your world in shades of negativity? This weight could be bitterness—a silent thief of joy and peace. Bitterness is sneaky; it starts small but can grow into a formidable force that impacts you and those around you. It’s like battling an invisible enemy, where the person most affected is, surprisingly, you. Let’s talk about how to recognize this adversary and, more importantly, let it go.
Finding peace within and with others
Peace—isn’t that what we all seek? But when bitterness takes root, it sows unrest, both within ourselves and our relationships. The first step towards reclaiming your peace is introspection. Ask yourself: Are you at peace with who you are? Are your relationships calm or chaotic?
If you’re distressed by a person or situation, the bravest and most healing thing you can do is seek resolution directly and privately. It’s not easy, but it’s a crucial step towards healing. If direct conversation doesn’t lead to peace, consider involving one or two unbiased individuals to help guide the conversation toward understanding and reconciliation.
Journey through the levels of letting go
Bitterness doesn’t appear out of nowhere; it builds through stages that, if left unchecked, can lead to a stronghold in our lives. Recognizing these stages is key to breaking free.
These are the levels leading up to the Stronghold of Bitterness.
Level 1 is unforgiveness
Please get a piece of paper to list every person you need to forgive, including yourself if needed. By each name, write what you are forgiving the person for very specifically. Then say the name out loud with what you’re forgiving them for — and for each person you’ll end the sentence, through the Blood of Jesus.
Level 2 is resentment
On the same sheet of paper, please list every person you have resentment towards, then by each name, list why you resent them. Please repeat your forgiveness step listed above — and for each person you’ll end the sentence, through the Blood of Jesus.
Level 3 is retaliation
Please repeat the instructions listed for Level I, but this time it’s for retaliation.
Level 4 is anger and wrath
Please repeat the instructions listed for Level I, but this time it’s for anger and wrath.
Level 5 is hatred
Please repeat the instructions listed for Level I, but this time it’s for hatred.
Level 6 is violence
Please repeat the instructions listed for Level I, but this time it’s for violence — whether it’s violence you committed, violence you’ve thought about, or violence done towards you.
Level 7 is murder
Please repeat the instructions listed for Level I, but this time it’s for murder.
What is your written prayer strategy?
Lord, I ask Your forgiveness for me willingly participating in each level of the Stronghold of Bitterness. Take time to name these seven levels out. Take a moment to receive His forgiveness for each level. Thank the Lord for forgiving you. You have no right to judge yourself harsher than The Judge Himself. Spirit of Bitterness, I come out of agreement with you. I recognize you in my life. I command you out of my life. Yeshua deliver me from these powers that are stealing my joy.
